Workshop, Old Co op, Ouston Lane DH2 1QT
I enjoy making furniture for particular places or purposes: cupboards for awkward places; fonts or tables that are part sculpture but entirely functional; chairs made specifically for the comfort of one person using their measurements; boxes made to measure to accomodate medals or memorabelia; stools to celebrate a new family member.
Over the years I have made everything from church screens to the menu covers for Alnwick Castle's Tree House. My sculptural seats and gates can be seen in nature reserves and parks in the north east of England and my work has been shown at Chelsea Flower Show as part of a show garden.
I usually finish work in oil which seals the wood and brings out its colour well. Other finishes can also be used, depending on what you might like. Cavities in the wood are sometimes left as a feature, sometimes filled with a transparent resin and sometimes with a metallic resin, giving the appearance of seams of gold or silver in the wood. Or sometimes I bridge crevices with wooden straps, as if the board were stitched together by wood. I generally make my own hinges in wood, and also my own timber brackets for bookshelves.
